You can watch Amadeus for free on the National Theatre’s YouTube channel at 7pm on Thursday, 16 July, then on demand for one week until 7pm on Thursday 23 July, but you’ll need to start watching by 4pm on 23 July to see it all. The production ran at the National from October 2016 to March 2017, and the theatre brought it back for a second run from January to April 2018. It also features live orchestral accompaniment by Southbank Sinfonia. Last year Mr Gillen was nominated for Best Actor in a Supporting Role at the Olivier Awards, and has played Liam in the ITV hit series Benidorm, and Brian in the Channel 4 comedy Fresh Meat. Mr Msamati is best known for playing Salladhor Saan in HBO series Game of Thrones, and he was the first black actor to play Iago at the Royal Shakespeare Company’s 2015 production of Othello. This new production is directed by Michael Longhurst, and stars Lucian Msamati as Salieri, and Adam Gillen as Mozart. However, his first encounter with Mozart is an accidental eavesdropping on a profane, private moment between him and his fiancée, Constanze Weber. He has not met Mozart but has heard of him and his extraordinary music and is thrilled to learn he in Vienna for a performance. The story then flashes back to 1781 when Salieri is a successful court composer in the court of Emperor Joseph II of Austria. Now an elderly man in a wheelchair, Salieri speaks directly to the audience and begins to explain the story behind the rumors.Īs a young man, Salieri desired to be a famous composer and made a bargain with God that if this were granted he would dedicate his life to honoring Him through music. As this memory play opens in November 1823, whispers and rumors are rampant that Antonio Salieri has admitted to murdering Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart thirty-two years prior.
